As a form of self-protection, horses have a highly developed ability to respond to subtle changes in stance, breathing, muscle tension, and general arousal of other horses and predators. This special ability to intuitively “read” others also applies to humans.
A horse is only comfortable interacting with us when we acknowledge our authentic feelings. He/she can sense when we’re masking our true emotions or being incongruent with how we feel.
A rise in blood pressure, an increased heartbeat, muscle tension, and emotional energy are all felt by the horse. We transmit these things involuntarily.
The horse will mirror the emotion or feeling being suppressed or masked. If we’re feeling anxious, they become anxious around us. Once we simply acknowledge the feeling, the horse will calm down, even if the emotion is still there.
Through their reactions to us, we come to understand ourselves and how we’re feeling and reacting in the moment. This is why horses are used in this work versus any other animal. They show us what we need to look at, question, reflect on, and change.
They help us open up to the present moment and listen to the ‘silent spaces’ between our thoughts.
Work with a horse and you will find yourself becoming more open to the messages and answers coming from your heart.
How does the EFEL process work?
The EFEL process involves working with horses from the ground (not riding them). Previous horse experience is not required. I will be present during all horse interactions but will allow you plenty of breathing room to experience the horses on your own.

Testimonials — What Others Are Saying About EFEL
I have been routinely around horses for the past twenty years or so. While I have known that my life has been greatly enriched in so many ways by having a horse of my own, I never realized that I was experiencing only a portion of the wonderful ways horses can bring about evengreater physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being…
At the retreat I learned ways to connect with a horse on a very personal level – ways which would allow me to observe the horse’s actions and reactions and, in turn, how to interpret the wisdom contained in the behavior. I was amazed at the powerful connection I made with the horse at the retreat. I was overwhelmed to discover that a horse, who I had no previous experience with, was able to evoke some profound, and much needed, equine wisdom!
It was wonderful working with Marilyn. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for the work leaves one feeling excited and motivated to learn more. And, most importantly, her thoughtfulness, empathy and intuition makes one feel safe to explore the potentially deeply transformative experience the horses have to offer.

I am going to take away so many things! But I feel like a different/better person after this wonderful day.
Jean D. – Kildeer, IL
Before the retreat I was often scattered and not in the present moment with my horses as well as people. Multi-tasking all the time… I learned the EFEL body scan (relearned and imprinted).
Marilyn really helped me settle and connect with myself and the environment. I felt very safe and supported which enabled me to feel comfortable with my experience and outcome. I returned to my life and it’s challenges in better touch with what I am feeling. Interacting with the wonderful herd was my favorite part. Marilyn is a gentle, genuine and a caring life force. One of those special clinicians, that truly is in present moment for those of us who come into their lives, seeking to grow and learn.

I learned a lot! For someone that has never been around horses, this was such a great introduction because we really were able to experience horses on a physical, energetic and spiritual level. I learned some great techniques to enhance my self awareness and awareness of others, establishing and maintaining boundaries, and making connections. The one on one time I got to spend with Jasmine was my favorite part. Just being in her energy field and making that connection – I won’t forget it. Marilyn has a very relaxed and friendly, casual style, and is also a good teacher, facilitator. She showed genuine care and concern for others. I liked that in some of the exercises, she demonstrated the techniques first. It not only showed that you are familiar with what you are teaching, but it also broke the ice and made it more comfortable for others to try some of these techniques.

The boundaries discussion with the Reflective Round Pen taught me that I can use boundaries to respect myself and the horse. It felt like I was able to establish and maintain a healthy relationship. I felt respected and heard by Buddy. I strongly enjoyed working with him. He is incredibly receptive. I also strongly enjoyed Marilyn as the facilitator. I felt that she did not pressure me or crowd me; left plenty of room for my own experience. She prompted good questions for me throughout the Reflective Grooming Session.

…it was a very calming, peaceful and an “unexpected” connection I felt so quickly… it was a real surprise! …sometimes I find it difficult to “focus” or find my “good” place, but I found that good place with Buddy so easily, without trying. I really could have stayed long after we parted….without a word spoken. It was a marvelously quietude I’ve never experienced before.Ever since I left Buddy, I keep seeing his eyes upon me, as if he was in my mind and soul – like he was reading me and connecting without words.
Mary G. – Hoffman Estates, IL
I received some surprising life lessons from an extraordinary teacher…a horse named Buddy. The layers of emotions that surfaced opened me up to the fascinating insights this work can offer. I was touched by the spirit and gentleness of Buddy. The quiet connection between us was almost telepathic and provided some deep insights for personal (or spiritual) growth.
Judy W. – Barrington, IL
It was an amazing experience to see the horse ‘mirror’ our hearts desire and find out the answer through the horse. Awesome! I am amazed with the level of understanding the horses have for us. I never realized how spiritually connected they are to us.
Angela S. – Wauconda, IL
More than interacting with the horses, this program teaches techniques that can be used to improve daily life, even without getting near a horse again. The horses and Marilyn share and demonstrate these techniques while showing you more about yourself.
Natasha W. – St. Charles, IL
Working with Marilyn was a wonderful experience, full of surprises and awareness’s. Marilyn has a very gentle and kind approach and was gifted in guiding me through my exercises with the horses. The horses are well taken care of and it’s beautiful to see the connection between Marilyn and her horses – that too is a learning experience.
I loved standing outside the pens and fully taking in the present moment of what I was feeling and thinking as I gazed at the horses and was able to write what I was noticing. I was grateful for the intuitive knowledge that I gained from that exercise of Meet the Herd.
I also enjoyed the Wu Wei exercise and again was able to fully experience the present moment and become aware of ways in which I operate in the world and this awareness I have taken into my daily life.
I plan on doing this with Marilyn every few months, because each time is different and each time I show up differently and in this way I am gauging my growth in my interpersonal awareness.
