Where Is God… In All Of This?
Have you ever asked yourself this simple but profoundly hard to answer question? Where is God?
Where is God when I just lost my job? Where is God when my good friend’s husband just received a cancer diagnosis? Where is God in the Orlando, FL shootings? Where is God in the atrocities happening to the African people? Where is God in so many horrible tragedies happening all over our planet today?
A story I heard the other day really struck me. It was about two brothers who worked together as window washers in New York City. On a December day in 2007 they were washing windows at a luxury high rise in Manhattan. The lines holding the scaffold mounted to the building broke causing them to plunge 47 floors to the ground. The younger brother, Edgar, 30 years old at the time, died instantly when he hit the earth. His then 37 year old brother, Alcides survived. Paramedics, scientists and doctors could not believe anyone could have survived such a massive fall. They called it a ‘medical miracle’.
Alcides sustained immense injuries, had numerous blood transfusions and many surgeries, along with years of physical, occupational, and speech therapy. He underwent psychotherapy to cope with years of depression over his brother’s death. To this day, Alcides questions why he was spared and not his brother. Where was God in all of this?
In an interview with the New York Post in 2014, Alcides stated that he thought God had given him a gift. So many people were there to help him through this difficult time. He is grateful for all the blessings in his life, which include his wife and now 3 children, and is glad to be alive. He also now walks for charity, and looks at life in a very different way.
I cannot claim to have ever experienced anything as devastating as what happened to Alcides Moreno or the people in Orlando, FL. My heart goes out to the so many that go through these horrible tragedies.
In my lifetime, I have experienced difficult situations like losing a job, or having a dearly loved, prized animal incur long-term injuries at the hand of an inept trainer. But, some of these incidences I would say were things out of my control. Low blows or just cruelty and unfairness, which in actuality, are part of everyone’s life from time to time. No one escapes.
What do you do when your life is visited by such sadness, heart-ache, unfairness or cruelty?
What did I do? I choose to move forward, taking into my own hands the management of getting the beloved pet medical help and on the road to hopefully full healing. I moved on to find another position in doing what I truly love, spiritual direction. I did all of this through letting go, contemplation and prayer.
Where is God in these situations? Where did I find Him? And where do others find God working in their tragedies, their losses, their experiences of not understanding why or ‘how come me’ predicaments?
I knew God was always with me; especially when I was going through these situations. He was hurting along with me, just as He hurts with all the others mentioned earlier going through traumatic issues.
Through Gods’ grace, He helped me to realize the importance of forgiving the people who wished me harm in regard to losing my job. He helped me to understand that there are many hurting in the world that will sometimes lash out at others when exhibiting their own personal hurt because of lack of knowing how to handle their own pain in a healthy way.
In addition, I found God in the fabulous people He put in my life. People who came to my aide in helping toward the healing of my beloved animal. People who daily would be there for me to help with whatever I needed. I am very grateful for them every single day! THAT IS WHERE GOD IS in tragedies. It is in the gifts we receive whether they be the people, places, or things that show up for us. Of course it is important that we be open to seeing them and being grateful for them that we will ‘See God Working’.
Alcides exclaimed how grateful he was and is for each of the people who came to his aide during his tragic ordeal. He saw it then and continues to appreciate the blessings now in his life.
For the people of Orlando, FL that are now suffering greatly, my prayers go out to them. Hopefully, in time, they will be able to see where God is working in their lives. Hopefully, this devastating incident will help them to realize, if some haven’t already, that the strongest bond and blessing in life is not hatred, or anger, or revenge, but Love, which will carry them through, and help them to help each other through, too.
